Red |
Red had a not-so successful career playing Fang. According to everyone associated with the show, Red just would not listen to instructions. Shots that involved Fang ended up running long and costing the production a lot of money in overtime and wasted time. After a few episodes of this, Red was written out of the series.
Red was trained by Rudd Weatherwax, who also handled Lassie. On Get Smart, he was handled by Bill Weatherwax.
Prior to Get Smart, Red played Jasper in Bachelor Father. On that show, he was worked by Frank Weatherwax.

It's interesting to me that of all the things that I've written on this site over the years, this short bio of Red has caused some of the angriest emails. The Weatherwax family have an outstanding and well-deserved reputation for providing animals for TV shows and several people expressed ire that I stated Red would not follow instructions, stating that couldn't be true. I mean no disrespect to the Weatherwax family, but every director, producer, and actor I've discussed Red with agrees that he just wouldn't do anything asked of him. Sorry about that.
